The Inhabitants of Banyen Bend - Smoky Lonesome

Episode 2 - Smoky Lonesome may not be so lonesome anymore!

One afternoon when Smoky was immersed in his sculpting, he totally forgot the time. The only hint that time had passed was the setting sun in the distance over the horizon. Smoky stopped and looked into the blood red sky thinking perhaps he'd better eat something. It was then he felt a presence behind him. Looking around a girl stood by watching him work.

At first he didn't recognise her and was about to abuse her for sneaking up on him.
"What's the meaning of this--" His face screwed up and he frowned.
"Mr. Lonesome it's me, Wendi? Wendi...your mail girl." She stood firm and didn't show any fear at all.
"Wendi...oh I'm sorry, I didn't recognise you without your uniform on." Smoky's shoulders relaxed.
Wendy was a friendly sort, but her dress sense left something to be desired, with her mismatched scarf around her head and high-heeled purple evening shoes, not something you would wear with jeans.

Poor Smoky, he was not used to mixing socially with anyone and his social skills were...well almost non-existant. He kept apologising and Wendi ended up laughing out loud.
"Will you relax! I would have reacted the same if someone snuck up on me in the dark too." She was very easy to talk to and down to earth, which was probably the only reason Smoky even talked to her. He preferred his own company and he had recently bought an aquarium and added some goldfish that he had caught, which was about the extent of his social interaction. Wendi, however, was the only person Smoky felt comfortable chatting.

"Where are my manners, please come in and have a bite to eat, I hadn't realised how hungry I was." Smoky and Wendi chatted over a plate of spaghetti and all the embarassment Smoky had felt was soon forgotten.
"Do you mind if I come by after work tomorrow, I would love to see how your sculpture is going, that's if you don't mind, I know you like your solitude, Mr Lonesome." Wendi looked shly down as she scooped up the last of the spaghetti sauce with the chunk of crispy bread.

Smoky didn't answer straight away. She cleared the dishes and washed them as she waited patiently for an answer. The atmosphere between them had thickened and there was an awkward pause. Wendi thought that was her cue to leave.
"Well I'd better be going, thanks for dinner." Wendi began to almost run out of the door. Just as she was getting in her car, Smoky ran out and yelled...
"Well...er see you tomorrow?" Although it was dark, a glimpse of Wendi's white teeth seem to light up as she began to pull out.
"Tomorrow then?" she shouted as she gestured a wave out her window as she took off. As he walked back inside, his mind was confused.

All through the next day he couldn't concentrate on anything for very long. He tried painting, but his mind would wander and the results were disastrous. When he attempted to go back to his sculpting, he was unfocused and almost cut his arm when he lost concentration for a moment and the chisel slipped.

He even left the house for awhile to go fishing, thinking that may relax his mind and give him some thinking time. Nothing seemed to help and the time for Wendi to turn up after work was drawing near. After catching a few small fish he headed home. He twitched and stretched letting out a deep sigh.

When she finally arrived she came up to Smoky and gave him a firm hug. Smoky was taken by surprise and he stiffened.
"Hi, Smoky, it is great to see you again." Wendi felt his hesitation and pulled back.
"Er...hi." It was the first time she had called him by his first name and he felt a warmth engulf his body.
"So...how are you? I see you haven't done too much more on the scultpture." Wendi gestered toward his half-finished work.
"I...er couldn't concentrate for some reason, so I went fishing and did a bit of painting."
"I love fishing! We must go together some time."
"Sure, thing. I have a special fishing spot that noone knows about, I'll show it to you sometime."

They chatted and ate, and chatted some more until it was getting dark.
"I should really get going. Thank you for a wonderful time today, Smoky." Then Wendi moved in close to Smoky and put her arms around him. "Would you mind if I kissed you goodbye?" Smoky's eyes widened. Wendi moved in and pecked him on the lips, then ran off to her car and sped off in a cloud of dust.

Stay tuned to the next episode of Smoky and Wendi...what will come of this fleeting encounter?
