The Cast of Castaway Cove - The Bittners

The Bittners are one of the eldest families here on Castaway Cove. Their grandparents were one of the survivors of the ill-fated "Silver Bird" on that fateful day the typhoon left them stranded near the Cove.

Marvin was born to a fisherman by the name of Peter, funnily enough, His grandparents were religious people and so Marvin’s father became Peter, The Fisherman. Nadine on the other hand was the daughter of a market gardener who grew all their own vegetables and had apples, lemon and lime orchards that stretched on for miles.

The two families met on Nadine’s parent’s property, where Marvin’s father had been asked to provide fish for Nadine’s mother’s restaurant. She was a renowned chef and everyone from all over Castaway Cove would be falling over each other to eat at their restaurant. Her food was succulent, perfectly presented and mouth-watering. Nadine herself ran it after her mother passed for many years and she is also a natural cook popular with the locals. Marvin and her got on very well from the beginning, they were the same age and had much in common.

Nadine enjoyed the restaurant while she was young, and though she didn’t want to run a whole farm with animals and such, in her retirement, she was very keen to make a small garden of her own. She had a green thumb and could turn her hand to any plant and make it thrive.

Marvin and Nadine loved going out together. They often went out on outings; anything they found was happening in the newspaper they would take advantage of and never wasted a day. Even when protestors stood outside the Town Hall, they were there to join in. Nadine didn’t have any particular political convictions but the excitement of the event and the risk factor coursed through her veins and she got right into it. Marvin just joined in to be there with her.

When they visited the local park one day, there was a ‘grill-off’ happening for the locals. As soon as they arrived on the scene...

...Nadine was being talked about by the others before she even got started. They were trying to express that they had no chance with Nadine being here. If they would stop talking about me and watch their food, they may have more luck, she smiled to herself.

There weren’t too many contenders that ended up competing but they decided to stay once they saw she was making the hot dogs too. A few people had a go themselves, but without too much luck. Burnt offerings were not highly sought after when they knew Nadine’s would be coming.

When Nadine and Marvin sat down to eat, they glanced at each other and chuckled. Soon after, they sat down to golden brown, steaming hot dogs. Once again Nadine’s natural cooking ability shined through. She never held grudges and invited everyone to share the hotdogs. Soon everyone came and joined them enjoying the neighbourly chit chat, which was supposed to be the whole point of a grill in the first place.

Whenever they went anywhere there was sure to be ocean (since they were on an Island) for a keen fisherman like Marvin to take advantage of the fresh fish for the taking. They were plentiful and mighty hungry so Marvin always got bites. Later they relaxed amongst the beach and enjoyed a swim, the sun and each other’s company.

Later they indulged in a drink or two then it began to get dark, so they headed home, enjoying yet another full day. They were adamant about making each day count, knowing they would not be around forever.

On another jaunt they came across a quaint little fishing hole away from the more popular parks and told no one about it. This park became their own favourite and spent many days there.

Marvin was in his element, the fishing was outstanding and as the water was renewed daily by the tide of a nearby beach, so there were many different types of fish always available. Nadine enjoyed the occasional fishing stint too but she was just as keen to just be there for Marvin to keep him company. As she wandered around however she found wild growing vegetables with seeds-a plenty which she snaffled to take home and put in her own garden.

After several trips to their park, Nadine woke up one morning early and found Marvin with his nose in a book. She was nearly always up before him unless he was going on a fishing trip. She was puzzled at his fascination with this book and wondered what it was that he was reading. She thought nothing more of it until she came home one afternoon after shopping and found a huge aquarium that Marvin had purchased on e-bay. He had been studying up on the different species of fish and their needs. She was thrilled that he had something to keep up his fishing interest at home as well as when they were out.

He spent hours at his aquarium and decided he was going to collect as many different species as possible instead of eating them every time. He thought if he could collect the perfect range of fish that it may become a small business on the side to assist with their finances. Collectors would come from miles to see his perfect specimens and it would keep him occupied and busy. So it started; he would catch some then add them to the aquarium. If he then caught a better quality he would release the others and add the new ones to the aquarium.
