The Cast of Castaway Cove - Darrell Johnston

Meet Darryl Johnston, who came from a long line of engineers. His ancestry from Castaway Cove originated from the only surviving engineer who was part of the crew on the “Silver Bird.” It was he who built the original windmill and supervised the digging of a well when the survivors of the hurricane realised they would be living on Castaway Cove indefinitely.

Darryl lost his grandparents and his parents at a young age. His grandparents from a disease, which rampaged Castaway Cove in the early developmental stages of the Island. It wasn’t until too late when they realised the epidemic was spreading too fast to be just a simple flu or cold. Then both his parents were lost at sea whilst on an ocean tour in an horrific storm. Darrell had to go and live with the Moors when Morgana and her mother were the only people available to take on a child at that time.

Living with a widow and a spinster didn’t really provide a suitable atmosphere for Darrell, and he grew up to be quite neurotic and was obsessive about checking anything that had working parts in minute detail. It was why Darrell decided to become a Forensic Specialist and was working toward that goal.
As Darrell grew up the women became rather taken by him. Being the only male in their lives, they tried everything to gain his attention. He was forced to date Morgana for a time even though she was 20 years his senior.

This only added to his anxiety and fed his fears even more. He was too easily impressed and to escape the clutches of the desperate women he lost himself in the computer and in games that would take him out of reality. Coming from brilliant ancestry Darrell became a genius and a computer whiz. His parents left him a small fortune and he bought himself a townhouse. He was never short of money although you would never know by looking at him.

Darrell likes Pop music, Hamburgers and his favourite colour is Irish Green. No one could work out why he liked this colour as he hated the outdoors and would steer clear of plant life. He didn’t mind indoor plants where he could control them; it was only when he was outside amongst plants he couldn’t control that put him in a dreadful mood.  He had always had such little control over his life that the only things he enjoyed were things he could control like the computer or cooking.

This seemed to be consistent with his choice of women also. Darrell wasn’t a bad-looking sort and had no shortage of women wanting to go out with him, being rich. He became overwhelmed with their attentions then as soon as they asserted themselves he got scared and broke up with them. This was the case with Alice McGill.  Alice was the first girl he met after moving in to his own place. They were even married for a short time until he realised she was a gold digger and after nothing but his money.

After marrying, they were always arguing about money and it didn’t take him long to work out what she was after.

So he invited her out having her think he was taking her out to an expensive restaurant and picked an argument with her that night which ended with him kicking her out. Being in the Military, she was fit and solid and Darrell hoped she wouldn’t slap him in the face. The force behind her blow could be quite damaging.

The next woman he met appeared very genuine and was everything Darrell thought he wanted in a woman. She turned out to be evil and a kleptomaniac. He only realised this when some of his mother’s priceless antiques he was keeping on display suddenly disappeared.

In fact he caught her in the act one night. He didn’t realise of course that it was her at the time, but he heard some strange noises and called the police immediately. They caught her and de-masked her. This was when he realised who she was. He had been hoodwinked once again.

The police held off her attack and remanded her in custody. Later Darrell found out that she had a record as long as her arm and was a well-known cat burglar.

After that Darrell was fed up with trying to find anyone. He didn't trust anyone he spoke to and went into hiding. He became a hermit for several months and no-one saw neither hide nor hair of him. He continued to go to work but that was the only outing he would go outside his home for. He learnt several new recipes and spent most of his time indoors.

Occasionally he would venture outside to cook his favourite meal, hot dogs, but only at night and when he knew no one would be likely to pass by and see him outside. Even then he couldn't wait to get back inside.

When he wasn't cooking he was on the computer night and day, working out the impossible posers that he searched for on the internet or playing chess either on the computer or on his set he had purchased while he was married.

One night there was a knock on the door. He almost jumped out of his skin. No one came to his home any more. He would get phonecall after phonecall from his ex's, wives and girlfriends, but none of them ever called by. If they did he would just ignore them and pretend he wasn't home so they gave up even trying after that. This day he peeped out the window and  saw a woman in a military uniform with an important looking briefcase in her hand. He was vey tempted not to answer the door but this time he was  intrigued, so he let her in.
